James Fogarty & Margaret Kirk |
Ireland |
early 1800's |
We are unsure whereabouts in Ireland James Fogarty and Margaret Kirk came from. There are many Fogarty's in Tipperary, so it could be from there. Their son Thomas Fogarty emigrated from Ireland. A check of the records in Australia suggests the only Thomas Fogarty who fits the description arrived in Melbourne onboard the Commodore Perry which left Liverpool on Aug 1861 and arrived in Melbourne in December. If he is the same one he must have travelled to NZ almost immediately. |
Luke Flynn & Bridget McLaughlin |
Ireland |
early 1800's |
Luke and Bridget had a daughter, Mary Flynn, who married Thomas Fogarty. She died in Sunnyside Assylum of lung disease. The Linwood Cemetary registrar says she had been in the province for 27 years, which puts her date of arrival at 1865, 4 years after Thomas. |
Thomas Cahill & Bridget Feeney |
Annaghdown, Galway, Ireland |
early 1800's |
Thomas & Bridget had a son called James, who emigrated to New Zealand. When James left in 1861 there were three Cahill families in Tonemace and were 3 brothers families. One family, that of James' father, Thomas James was known as being the original of the Cahills. The other family is known as Thomas Edward.
James married Ellen Forde and they had a son (Thomas?) who they left in Ireland, possibly with grandparents.
Mary Cahill who still lives in Annaghdown thinks that it is likely that James and Ellen grew up together, were young sweethearts, got married and set off together. Her great-grandfather and James Cahill were first cousins.
Apparently James registered at gabriels Gully as a gold miner and there is a possibility he was accompanied by a brother or cousin. The family lived in Gala St for many years. James, according to some stories was known as "Slasher" because he had the habit of slashing out at people, particularly children, with his walking stick - to keep them away from the ulcers on his legs!! James died at 84 of bronchitis. |

early 1800's |
Alexander Rose and Janet Smith had a son called Alexander who was illegitimate. Alexander's death cert states his mother's name as Jessie Stewart but on the headstone she shares with her son, her name is Janet Smith. Confirmed via her death cert, her son in attendance. |
John Gordon & Elizabeth Clerk |
Elrick, Cabrach, Aberdeenshire, Scotland |
1700's-1800's |
Alexander Rose married Sophia Cowie Gordon. John Gordon & Elizabeth Clerk were her grandparents. I originally though John Gordon's parents were William Gordon & Ann Ross, but I now do not think they were. If this couple adhered to the naming custom then John's father was probably George and looking at the witnesses there is a George Gordon at every baptism. |

George & Jean were Elizabeth's parents. |

James Moncur & Margaret Tindal |
Montrose, Angus, Scotland |
1700's-1800's |
One set of Helen McWilliam's great grandparents on her mother's side were James Moncur & Margaret Tindal. |
James Moir & Ann Phaw |
prob Aberdeenshire, Scotland |
1700's-1800's |
The other set of Helen McWilliam's great grandparents on her mother's side were possibly James Moir & Ann Phaw. This has been unproven. |
